Mar 13, 2009 - El Dorado County Fire Safe Council (EDCFSC) says that we are in an area in which wildfires are a fact of life: It is not IF, but WHEN, we will be involved in a wildfire. Since December 2005, some Sly Park Hills Area residents have volunteered to organize neighborhood fire safe activities. To date we have been able to work with the appropriate entities to establish an alternative emergency evacuation route off Makinaw Road and obtain EDCFSC support for green waste dumpster and voucher programs.

There is much more to be done to properly prepare us for the inevitable wildfire emergency. Since we don’t have a homeowners’ association we’ve needed to organize our Sly Park Hills community fire safe programs every year. We write this note, as the two Sly Park Hills residents remaining on the Executive Committee of our local Sly Park Hills Area Fire Safe Council to tell you that we cannot continue without your help!

Much needs to be done for this fire season. We need a community emergency plan which includes identifying neighbors who need extra assistance in the case of an evacuation, etc. Also a great deal of work needed can be done by each individual household. For example, one of the most important needs is to evaluate and document the status of the “fire safe defensible space” around the over 600 homes in our neighborhood. The EDCFSC has provided us with the standardized forms for these evaluations and the materiel for a brief training program to conduct and document the evaluation. Thus you can help all of us by volunteering to fill out an evaluation form for your residence and/or set up a local group to evaluate the defensible space for the homes in your immediate neighborhood, street, or dog walking route.

Please come to future meetings and/or call us to join in our neighborhood efforts to prepare for the inevitable wild fire emergency.

Sincerely,

Tom Schulz – Speckled Road - Home 644-3473    and  Bill Buetow – Rainbow Trail - Office 644-6700
