Notes from Tom Schulz regarding Sly Park Hills Area Fire Safe Matters

Notes on the June 25, 2008 Sly Park Hills Area Fire Safe Council Meeting

at Jenkinson Lake Park Retreat Building

The meeting opened at 6.15 pm with a BBQ sponsored by the SPHASFC Executive Committee and donations from some of the members. The business meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm by Co-chairs Craig Jones and Tom Schulz. Tom and Craig briefly discussed the communications problems we are having with the El Dorado County Fire Safe Council leadership. They noted, however, the passage of time should take care of problems and we still have made progress in most of our fire safe activities.

The June 1 opening of the emergency evacuation route through the EID and Forrest Service properties adjacent to Mackinaw was a success and a thank you letter to OES and others was published in the Mt Democrat Letters to Editor section.

The potential for another route via Golden to Starkes Grade was enhanced by the announcement of Marvin Bukema that he was meeting with Marty Hackett (OES) to show the feasibility of an emergency route even without improved roads Marvin showed the SPHAFSC the KNOX locks he was providing OES for that route. A question was raised about a map locating the route and Mike Angles that such a map is available on the website. The attendees noted their thanks to Mike Slusher for his key role in identifying these routes

Jan Todd announced that the Green Waste Dumpsters would be available beginning July 2nd and hoped that extensive usage by the community would enable EDCFSC to provide financial support for the dumpsters longer than the 10 days currently scheduled. Lois Harter volunteered her truck to help anyone who wanted to have their green waste transported to the local dumpster

Len Heinz noted the neighborhood watch program that he had in place several years ago and asked if the SPHASFC could restart the program for Sly Park Hills. Mike Slusher accepted Mr. Heinz’ offer of data from the earlier program and will work to get it restarted soon.

Bill Buetow mentioned the need for us to continue the defensible space surveys and noted that the forms are available at his office. A question was raised about providing training for these defensible space surveys and it is a possible that we will devote time to that at the next meeting.

Bob Todd informed the members about the opportunities to get the Red Cross more active in our area and passed out information concerning that. He also mentioned that several more people have completed CERT training and noted that there will be a meeting on July 12th, Saturday morning.

Mike Angles again announced that there are many links and information people might want about fire safety on the website, www.slyparkfiresafe.org.
