Community Education

Community preparedness is like a stool with three legs. Each leg is dependent upon the other. Our three legs are:

  • Community Involvement
  • Risk Mitigation
  • Education.

This section of the Sly Park Hills Area Fire Safe web site provides community education to help us prepare. Updates will be provided as we learn of them. If you know of an upcoming community education class, we will post it here. Please drop us a note at slyparkfiresafe@yahoo.com

Red Cross Shelter Management Class in Pollock PinesClick here to view the flyer.

Bob and Jan Todd are trying to find enough people who would be interested in a Red Cross Shelter Management Class in Pollock Pines.  If we can get enough people together Red Cross will send an instructor up to train us.   All three classes can be presented in one day and they will do it on a Saturday for our convenience.

CERT Classes

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people that they serve. The goal is for emergency personnel to train members of neighborhoods, community organizations, or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then integrated into the emergency response capability for their area.

First Responder Awareness (FRA) Training

Hosted by Pollock Pines CERT

Everyone is welcome to attend the class!

Who should take this class?

During an emergency response is there a possibility that the incident will involve chemicals or other hazardous materials? There is always a chance a responder may face a hazardous material (hazmat) situation. OSHA requires professional hazmat responders to take one of five levels of training which start with FRA. As a volunteer, FRA will help you recognize a hazmat situation and give you information on what to do. At the end of the class the student will be trained to recognize a hazardous materials incident and implement actions to protect themselves and the public from harm.

At the successful completion of the course a Certificate of Training* issued by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) will be available.

* The class is free but a $4.00 fee is required to process the Certificate of Training. You are not required to pay for/receive the certificate to attend the class.

Course Objectives

Identify the course purpose, scope, and applicable plans and regulations.

State the responsibilities of the first responder at the awareness level.

Recognize a Hazmat incident through basic clues, warning signs, placards, labels, shipping papers, and material safety data sheets; identify, from a safe distance, the hazardous substance(s) present at the incident; understand the need for a positive safety attitude; and, describe a safe approach to a Hazmat incident.

Describe first responder awareness actions, understanding the need for responder safety, isolation of the incident scene, the need for additional resources and making required notifications.

Identify the purpose and need to safely initiate command; cite basic identification and assessment techniques; demonstrate the use of the Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook (current DOT ERG) for basic action planning.
